The Beatitudes - being blessed "possessing an inward contentness and joy that is not affected by the physical circumstances." Matthew
5:3 "God blesses those who realize their need for him, Today we continue our study on the Beatitudes. The original message occurred when many of JESUS' followers had gathered to hear exactly what they must do to align themselves with JESUS. What HE told them was very surprising, I am sure. While many may have expected rebellion against the tyranny of the time, JESUS seemed to give an entirely opposite message. He began with the following statement: "God blesses those who realize their need for him, So, GOD blesses the ones who need HIM? If you could place yourself in the time frame - Israel before JESUS - you might think this to be an absurd statement! GOD blessing people who need HIM! It was held in opinion that the wealthy and powerful of that time were the blessed ones. Wait! The same is true today, to a large extent. We make idols out of movie and music stars. Even in the Christian music genre we elevate people who excel and count them blessed. But, isn't it interesting that by the standard spoken of by the ONE who does the blessing, it is those who are poor in spirit or realize their need for GOD who are truly blessed. Understand that this does not preclude our worldly stars from knowing HIM. It just is a requirement that, no matter our life circumstances, we must hunger for HIM! HE is not a respecter of persons. Translation - your circumstances in this world don't impress or repel HIM. When our need is HIM, HE makes us happy (blessed) in a way that the world can't remove! HE gives us exactly what we want - HIMSELF! Are you hungry? If you are, I can promise you this: You will be filled!
