Choose To Live Your Life Day By Day In the 'JOY' Of The LORD!

The Beatitudes - being blessed
 Fred Schwenk

"possessing an inward contentness and joy that is not affected by the physical circumstances."

In this Series  we begin a study of what may be the most well-known passage in the New Testament.  It is from the Sermon on the Mount.  JESUS was addressing HIS followers.  HE wanted to let them know what the Citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven are (or will be) like.

HE did not call this passage the Beatitudes.  The name came from the fact that HE continually used the word, "blessed."

This word - blessed - has become sort of a no-meaning word in our time.  Just due to over use, I guess.  But to JESUS, that word held volumes of meaning.  Here is a good explanation of the term:

The word traditionally translated into English as "blessed" or "happy" is in the Greek original μακαριος; a more literal translation into contemporary English would be "possessing an inward contentness and joy that is not affected by the physical circumstances." Each of the Beatitudes presents a situation in which the person described would not be described by the world as "blessed," yet Jesus declares that they truly are blessed, and they are blessed with a blessing that outlasts any type of blessing this world has to offer.

I think it is a good time, considering the state of the world, to take a look at what kind of character traits JESUS held in high regard!  First take a moment to read the passage from the Gospel of Matthew

Matthew 5

The Sermon on the Mount

1 One day as the crowds were gathering, Jesus went up the mountainside with his disciples and sat down to teach them.

The Beatitudes

2 This is what he taught them:

3 "God blesses those who realize their need for him,
for the Kingdom of Heaven is given to them.

4 God blesses those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.

5 God blesses those who are gentle and lowly,
for the whole earth will belong to them.

6 God blesses those who are hungry and thirsty for justice,
for they will receive it in full.

7 God blesses those who are merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.

8 God blesses those whose hearts are pure,
for they will see God.

9 God blesses those who work for peace,
for they will be called the children of God.

10 God blesses those who are persecuted because they live for God,
for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.

11 "God blesses you when you are mocked and persecuted and lied about because you are my followers.

12 Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted, too.

Over the breath of this Series we will examine the difference between the world and the follower of JESUS.  Take heart!  Be encouraged!  You may find out some very excellent things about yourself!
