VICTORY II
Fred Schwenk

1 Samuel 19:5
He took his life in his hands when he killed the Philistine. The LORD won a great victory for all Israel, and you saw it and were glad. Why then would you do wrong to an innocent man like David by killing him for no reason?"

Philistines, Philistines, Philistines . . . .   Seems like that's all you ever hear - Philistines!  Why?  Well, in the Old Testament, they were the major, long-standing enemy of GOD'S people.

But why so much "air-time" about them?  Well, they are a parallel or type of the enemy today.  But, the enemy today is a spiritual form of Philistines as referred to in Ephesians Chapter 6,  ". . . rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."

And yes, there are enemies in the physical realm as well, but the motivation comes from the spiritual realm.  That is why in Ephesians 6, just before the list of enemies, Paul cautions us, "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood."

Here is what I mean.  Suppose there is someone at work who knows just exactly how to get you upset and discouraged.  Our natural response is to fight back by fighting the natural person.

But, according to the Word, we are not to fight flesh and blood.  This is a hard lesson to learn.  We are to war against the spiritual enemy behind that person.

Just like a "sock-puppet," when you pull out your hand,  we defeat the spiritual enemy in control, the natural enemy deflates.  We are instructed to use the armor of GOD, and "pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests."

David's key to victory over the Philistines was to fight with the right weapons!  Our victory over the darkness of this world is the same!

Make a short list of the three enemies facing you at this time and use the passage in Ephesians 6:10-18 to do battle.
