Hear the Ten Commandments

The Ten Commandments
(From Exodus 20:1-17 - New Living Translation)

1 "Do not worship any other gods besides ME."
2 "Do not make idols of any kind"
3 "Do not misuse the name of the LORD your GOD. "
4 "Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy"
5 "Honor your father and mother"
6 "Do not murder"
7 "Do not commit adultery"
8 "Do not steal"
9 "Do not testify falsely against your neighbor"

10 "Do not covet"

As a child in America, I learned them at church and also in public school.  Yes, public school.  I also learned the 23rd Psalm, and the 100th Psalm and was privileged to lead prayer many times before class began.

We now live in what is called a "Godless Society."  But nothing could be further from the truth.  Society will never be Godless, but what god are we speaking about?

The One True GOD is the One who gave us HIS heart in this Scripture above.  To follow the Ten Commandments is to become like HIM!  Salvation does not come by following them, because we cannot follow them 100 percent of the time.

Face it, you have broken them.  I have broken them.  Sometimes daily!  They are not there for the purpose of salvation.  JESUS came to do that.  The Commandments are there to do the following

1.  Reveal to us HIS Character
2.  Lead us on the right path
3.  Help us to become like
HIM
4. Protect us from damage caused by allegiance with the god of this world
5.  Define sin
6.  More . . . .

Notice that the commandments are in quotes.  Very important.  Moses did not find these on a tablet of stone laying on the ground somewhere and decided to use them as a conduct code.  They were the Spoken Words of the HOLY FATHER!  They were so powerfully spoken that they burned their way into the stone.

These are the Words of the FATHER to HIS People.  That would include us, if you and born again and follow the path that JESUS laid for us.  We are HIS children.  And as a FATHER, HE has given us a code of ethics.  They are clear, simple, precise and concise!  Not confusing in the least.

And speaking of path, have you ever walked through a nature trail?  The area I live in has many.  And it also has things like alligators, crocodiles, and several varieties of highly poisonous snakes.

Needless to say, it is vital to my health to stay on the path!  And that path must be clearly marked to help me keep from straying.  It is my choice for the most part to stay or stray.

Get the analogy.  The Ten Commandments are the Path markers.  When we violate a commandment we are off the Path and are in harm's way!

No, salvation does not come through the Ten Commandments.  It is Trusting our GUIDE (that would be the JESUS) that brings us safely through the danger of this world.  But, it must be said that JESUS did not ever violate the Commandments and will never lead you or me in any other Path!

Trusting JESUS is what enables us to walk the Path!

Why is there so much controversy concerning the Ten Commandments?  In America, judges and other civic officials are getting in trouble for having them in their offices.  Monuments are being removed forcibly from public places.

It is as though there is an organized battle to wipe out all traces of the Commandments.  Interesting.  The truth is that there is a battle.  How do you think the enemy of our souls feels about the Ten Commandments?

I will answer that.  He hates them.  He does not now, and never did live by them.  He was removed from his place of service in the Heavens because of his disregard for them.  His final home in the Lake of Fire is the result of ignoring them

So there is the battle.  The enemy is also called (in Scripture) the god of this world.  Look at the first commandment.  Ouch!  He is in big trouble.

So there is a battle.  Who's side are you on?  Would you like to water down the Commandments?  That is the wrong side to be on.  Do you ignore the Commandments?  Still the wrong side!

Take time over the next few pages to saturate yourself in them!  That is the right side!  That is where JESUS is!  Let's be sure that we are on the same side with JESUS!

An argument against following the Ten Commandments is that they are not relevant in today's world.  And I will agree with that 100%.  Wait, don't leave.  Hear me out.

Watch TV, listen to radio, surf the web, watch your co-workers and fellow-students.  This is all evidence that we as a people have done everything we can to remove the relevance of the Ten Commandments from our society.

As much as we may personally love and honor them, you have to admit that society is on the fast track to destroy them from all public record.

But, back to the relevance issue.  Are they?  Well, of course they are.  They are , were and always will be relevant and more.  They are the way the LORD our GOD fashioned people to behave.

The LORD has given us a Conscience!  Picture it like this. If the Conscience were a computer, the Ten Commandments would be the Operating System.  Violate the Operating System and you will get a Blue Screen Error notifying you that you have Performed an Illegal Operation (Macintosh users must talk to a Windows user to understand this analogy).

If not for the fall of Adam, we would live every second of our lives in full accordance with them!  And would that be a better life than the one we are now living?  Would this world be a bit higher in quality if governed by the FATHER'S Commands.

Of course it would.  But that will never happen in this age.  True, but I have good news and good hope!  As we put the Ten Commandments into effect in our own lives, we make little pockets of Eternity around us.

That is where I want to live - in a pocket of Eternity!  How about you?
